Marta began her career as a young person working in the mental health field as a social worker.
Marta’s opioid use disorder (OUD) developed over time as she struggled to cope with the demands of graduate school. Marta sought help from a co-worker who was in recovery, and today, she has been in long-term recovery for over 40 years.
After a long career working as a social worker, professor, therapist, advocate, and now commissioner, she’s sharing her story publicly for the first time. “I lost a student to overdose during the pandemic, and I felt that it was important for me to share my story. Not to say 'do it like I did it,' but to help people realize that one, recovery is possible, and two, there’s recovery people in every facet of life.”
